Student's watercolour success at capital exhibition
Stefan with his artwork on display in London Final year Kirklees College student, Stefan Ciulu saw his artwork on show at a London exhibition last week.

Stefan is 21 years old, from Leeds and a final year BA (Hons) student of Fine Art for Design at Kirklees College's Wheelwright Centre. His work was recently accepted for the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours Exhibition at the Mall Galleries in central London.

Billed as displaying 'some of the country's leading artists', the exhibition displayed exciting paintings including figurative and abstract, traditional and experimental work and ran from 21 April - 1 May.

Stefan had the maximum of four pieces of work accepted to this exhibit, which he did as part of his Year 3 'Major Project'. The Major Project module requires students to submit their work for awards, competitions and commissions both nationally and internationally in an attempt to begin their professional career before they graduate.

Stefan's contribution was a series of paintings depicting family members. The people in the paintings are family from several generations ago. Stefan has no direct memory of these distant relatives, only the photographs and stories he has been told by his parents provide him with information about their lives. The paintings are his attempt to study their lives through art. Stefan submitted the paintings as they provided both a contemporary and traditional approach to watercolour painting

He said:

"Being selected for the exhibition was a wonderful surprise that made me realise that I could compete in a professional arena. At the opening of the exhibition I met many valuable contacts and sold my first work professionally."

Eve Gray, Course Leader BA (Hons) Fine Art for Design said:

"Stefan is to be congratulated on his well-deserved success. His paintings are quite beautiful and for him to be selected for such a prestigious exhibition is a wonderful beginning to what I am sure will be a very successful career."

The Patron of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours is Her Majesty the Queen and the Honorary Member is HRH the Prince of Wales.
