| Taking Adult Learners' Week on the town |
Running from May 15-21, Adult Learners' Week recognises the achievements of outstanding individuals, groups, families and projects through exhibitions, events and awards. During this week-long festival of learning, Kirklees College will be ‘setting up shop’ at the Packhorse Centre in Huddersfield and Longcauseway in Dewsbury. The ‘Kirklees College experience’ takes over a shop at the Packhorse Centre, Huddersfield. The shop will offer interactive demonstrations and displays on yoga, flower arranging, Spanish, art and more. There will be a polling kiosks set up to vote on the design of the new Kirklees Neighbourhood Learning Partnership logo and a free smoothie bar. Details on Staff will be providing information and advice on college courses along with details about free taster sessions in the area.
Access to Higher Education events at Kirklees College Find out about Access to Higher Education and the courses which Kirklees College design for adults wishing to progress to university. 15- 21 May (Weds, Thurs and Sat 10am – 4pm), Encounters, Dewsbury Adult Learners Week exhibition ‘Learning Again’ at the Encounters shop on Longcauseway in Dewsbury. This exhibition comprises personal adult learning experiences from adult learners including those who study at Kirklees College in a very unique way. Free entry.
Wed 19 May (10am-2pm), Marquee, Dewsbury In addition to the activities around the area, adult learners from across Kirklees celebrated at Huddersfield Town Hall on Thursday 13th May as part of the Kirklees Community Learning Awards evening. Kirklees Council hosted the event on behalf of the Kirklees Neighbourhood Learning Partnership. Award nominations were received from a wide range of organisations across the area and six individuals and two group winners were from Kirklees College. Lynne Carmichael, Skills For Life tutor at Kirklees College takes evening classes every Wednesday in English and IT at Earlsheaton Technology College. She nominated the winning English and IT adult learner group. She said: "I nominated this group of learners as they have shown an exemplary commitment to the English and IT course. It's admirable that this group, who range from 35-70 years old, have never missed a class, always help each other out and really gel as a team. The group of nine come along every Wednesday evening after a day's work and give their all to the course. I think that these people are really good role models for adults who want to learn again." At 53 Susan Taylor from Newsome sat the first exam of her life at Kirklees College to achieve Entry 2 Literacy in 2008, Entry 3 Literacy in 2009 and Entry 2 Numeracy in 2009. Susan has a visual impairment and cerebral palsy and was nominated by Visual Impairment Support Worker, Jannine Greenwood for a Community Learning Award for her dedication and achievements. With Jannine's support, Susan has been able to study at college and return to learning. She received her award at Huddersfield Town Hall on Thursday evening. Susan said: "It means a lot to know I can go to college and achieve like any other student. I look forward to coming to college every week and feel very proud to have achieved the qualifications I have."
