| Kirkwood Hospice benefits from charitable students |
The Brunel House-based students have rebuilt a bench which was in poor repair and was placed around the base of a tree in the grounds of the much-loved hospice. The bench, which took 96 hours of hard work, is made from stained softwood and is an exact replica of the original.
Rob Utley, is Curriculum Team Leader for Construction at Kirklees College, Brunel House. He explained: As Kirkwood Hospice provides such a worthwhile service for the community, we thought it provided a perfect opportunity for a student project and we were able to tie this in to their course work. We would really like to be more involved with community groups and projects where we can make a difference and would be keen to hear from any charity or group in Kirklees that believes they are a worthy cause with a suitable project." Garry Wilkinson, Fundraising and Marketing Manager at Kirkwood Hospice said: "The bench was located in a very popular part of the garden, enjoying shelter from the rain and shade from the sun, provided by the tree under which it was placed. Unfortunately, due to years of exposure to the elements the condition of the bench had deteriorated making it impossible for people to use. Now, thanks to the generosity and hard work of the students, patients and their families will be able to enjoy the gardens for years to come." All construction students at Kirklees College benefit from activities that enhance their personal and social development as part of their course, whilst providing a service to the community. More students from the college are due to return to the hospice to lay flagstones near the bench in the next few weeks.
Kirklees College would welcome suggestions for community work from any groups, charities or community organisations who need some help with manual labour or construction work starting in September this year. Each request will be considered based on the benefit it would give to the students and how it will help the local community. If the project provides a suitable level of community and student benefit, the college students will help. If you are interested in suggesting a project for September, please contact Rob Utley on 01484 437000.
