Junior apprentices in Kirklees awarded at college
Diploma in Society, Health and Development students with tutor Vicky Breheney Year 11 students from across Kirklees were presented with college certificates when they were the first to complete the Young Apprenticeship programme in Motor Vehicle in May.

This new course was introduced in September 2008, is available to students aged 14-16 and is an addition to the popular vocational courses available to 14-16 year old students at Kirklees College.

All of the students have now applied to Kirklees College to study post 16 with the majority of them hoping to gain a full-time apprenticeship in Motor Vehicle.

As well as attending Brunel House one day a week to do practical and theoretical work, the students had to complete 50 days work experience over the two year course.

The students were all really enthusiastic about the programme and they all particularly enjoyed the practical side of the course and the work experience.

Kiklees College tutor, John Wood, said:

"Completing the course and the 50 days work experience will definitely give the students a better chance in securing a full-time apprenticeship in the future. The course has been really successful and it has helped these young people feel motivated to carry on in this field of work."

Also during May Kirklees College presented the first four Diploma in Society, Health and Development students with their certificates of achievement. The new course was also introduced in September 2008 and combines practical and theoretical achievement for 14-19 year olds.

The four students who achieved their diploma are from All Saints Catholic College and Birkdale High School.
Both these programmes are part of the 14-19 national reform that aims to equip all young people with the essential skills they need for life, work and study.
