Create 2010: A world of creativity on show
Student Maria Scaife's image is just one of hundreds of work on show Kirklees College's Creative Industries department will open an extraordinary event to the public this week, showcasing some of the region's best creative talent.

'Create 2010' is a joint venture between Kirklees College’s Highfields Centre in Huddersfield and Wheelwright Centre in Dewsbury (also known as the Batley School of Art and Design).

Traditionally, both centres had put on spectacular, yet separate shows for the public. The events demonstrate the creative courses available to potential students and highlight the talent that these courses have developed.
This year, both shows will form 'Create 2010, a Creative Industries Event' and will run simultaneously for the first time since the merger of Huddersfield Technical College and Dewsbury College to form Kirklees College in 2008.

Using one brand, as designed by Kimberly Bottomley, a student in BA Hons Graphic Communication studying at the Wheelwright centre, the shows are set to wow the public with a huge range of student's art, design and performances.

  • Following its VIP launch on Wednesday 16 June, the Highfields centre in Huddersfield will open up to the public on 17,18,21,22, and 23 June from 10am - 4pm. On Thursday 17 and Friday 18 June, there will be live music from 11-4pm in the courtyard of the Highfields Centre, which the public are welcome to attend.
  • The Wheelwright Centre (Batley School of Art and Design) will also celebrate its launch with a VIP viewing and fashion show on Thursday 17 June, before opening up to the general public on 18, 21, 22 and 23 June from 10am – 4pm.

Create 2010 will be the largest cross-campus show attempted so far by Kirklees College. Subject Sector Leader for Creative Industries Karen Matula at Kirklees College is optimistic about the response from the public. She said:

"We are confident that this event will be one of the greatest student-led events in Yorkshire and will showcase the excellent calibre of courses we have on offer which allow students to perform to the highest standard.

Anyone interested in art, design, fashion, photography, music or performing arts will be sure to enjoy a feast of brilliance at these events. For anyone interested in taking a course, whether for leisure or to gain a qualification, there will be plenty of staff and students available to talk about the courses available and the work that they have created."

The shows will include art and design exhibitions and shows and live performances from talented music and performing arts students.
