Introduction

The Learning Resource Centres offer services and facilities to all College students, providing a variety of materials to support all subjects at every study level. Staff are always happy to help so please do not hesitate to ask for assistance.

Using the Huddersfield Centre Library


Library Access

The main entrance is on the ground floor. Lifts within the library allow easy wheelchair access to all levels. An enrolment card is needed to enter the library via the swipe system, staff are at hand to offer assistance if required. The card is needed to borrow items and to use the computers: if lost, stolen or forgotten please report to the College reception where temporary cards can be issued.

Study Areas
The Library provides different types of study area to meet the needs of students and staff.

  • Silent study area. Situated in a separate room on the ground level. For people who wish to study in silence.
  • Main study area. For people wishing to study in a quiet learning atmosphere.
  • Group study area. Situated on the lower level this area is reserved for College tutors to work with their students.
  • Video viewing. Situated on the upper level for individuals or pairs to watch the library videos. Please ask at the Enquiry Desk.

Borrowing and Renewing.
College students can borrow up to 6 items. The standard loan period is 4 weeks and items may be renewed twice unless requested by another student. Renewal requests can be made by telephone, via email, or in person.

The library issues heavily used items on an overnight and short loan basis but these cannot be renewed.

Fines
5p per day for standard (4 week)loans, 10p per day for short (7/14 day) loans and 50p per day for Assignment Collection (overnight) loans up to a maximum of £2.00 per item.

Finding Information for Your Studies

All three Learning Resource Centres provide an extensive range of material with the intention of supporting all courses run by the College.

Books
Most books are available for loan but there is a large collection of reference books (clearly marked) which cannot be issued. There are also separate Quick Reference section with fact books, dictionaries, directories, encyclopaedias and statistics.

The Centres also stock audio books and combined loans of books and audio tapes together.

Magazines and Newspapers

The Centres subscribe to many magazines and a full listing of the Huddersfield Centre Library is available on the portal. Current issues are displayed in the Library and back issues are available to view on request.

Some back copies are also available for borrowing and further magazine and newspaper articles are available in electronic format online.

The Huddersfield Centre Library takes the newspapers listed below.

  • Daily newspapers: Daily Telegraph, Independent, Financial Times, Guardian, Huddersfield Daily Examiner, Times, Yorkshire Post and Daily Jang
  • Local evening newspapers: Yorkshire Evening Post
  • Weekly newspapers: Dewsbury Reporter, Independent on Sunday, Observer and Sunday Times

Internet, Databases, Library Portal and WebPages
Access to the Internet is available for college work only. The Learning Resources Centres subscribe to a wide range of databases to assist research which can be accessed from any computer with internet access. It is also possible to find recommended websites on the library catalogue.

Advice on citations, new books and a library induction offering further support and guidance can also be viewed.

DVDs and Videos
The Centres stock a number of DVDs that relate to College courses and careers including items broadcast by the Open University and television companies.DVDs can be borrowed for 2 weeks. DVDs are shelved in subject area, except for those relating to careers which are shelved in the Careers section.

Careers and Higher Education Information
Information on different careers, job applications and interviews is shelved separately on the lower floor of the Huddersfield Centre Library. There are reference and lending copies of many of the books, as well as a large number of leaflets. Also there is a range of DVDs covering careers subjects. A wide range of university and college of higher education prospectuses is available for use in the library. In addition, there are many guides to courses, admission requirements and application procedures.

Other Library Facilities


Laptops and Whiteboard

The Huddersfield Centre Library has laptops (which operate on the wireless network) and an interactive whiteboard. These can only be borrowed by tutors to use in the library with students.

Library Online Catalogue
This tells you whether a particular item is in stock, where it is kept and whether it is on loan or available. It also helps you to find out what items are stocked on a particular subject. It is available at http://webopac.kirkleescollege.ac.uk and within the library. You can renew books, look at your library account and reserve books using a PIN number (available from the library counter).

Reservations
This service is free and reserving a book can be done at the library counter or by the Library Online Catalogue.We will send you a letter to tell you when it is available for ollection.

Remember that as a Kirklees student you are entitled to join the Public Library and have reference access at The University of Huddersfield library when you show your student card.

Printing, Photocopying and Scanning
Black/white and colur printing facities are available in the library. Prices are as follows:
A4 sheet black and white 5p
A3 sheet black and white 10p
A4 sheet colour 20p - 50p
A3 sheet colour 40p - £1.00

A black and white photocopier is available on a self-service basis (full instructions are on display).Colour photocopying is available on resquest. Prices are as follows:
A4 sheet black and white 5p
A3 sheet black and white 10p
A4 sheet colour 35p
A3 sheet colour 70p

The library also provides laminating, binding and scanning facilities, just ask at the counter for details. Please note that scanned items can only be sent to a College email account.

Behaviour in the Library

  • The library is a place for learning rather than socialising so please restrict all conversation to coursework and keep voices to a minimum at all times.
  • Please do not move or reserve chairs without permission from library staff.
  • Eating and drinking are not allowed in any part of the library.
  • Mobile phones must be switched to silent and personal stereos must be turned down so as not to disturb others.
  • Please do not leave belongings unattended; security staff will remove them.
  • Any student who takes a book that has not been issued to them through the security barrier will receive a caution.
  • Please respect the needs of other library users and abide by the student charter at all times.
